This blog is designed to secure a release from Gambia of British engineer Charlie Northfield from Mile 2 Prison in Gambia. Charlie, a married father of three, is falsely detained in the country and accused of “economic crimes” along with his employer, Carnegie Minerals.
Both deny the claims. Charlie has only been with the company for a few months. The company believes the charges follow a statement by the Gambian government that silicon has been found in the country and that it intends to become the “next silicon valley”. In fact silicon is sand. Carnegie has a mining license to operate in Gambia and, as part of its agreement with the government there, any dispute should be settled by international arbitration.
